The issue of heavy metal intoxication deriving from dental amalgam fillings has been arising to the awareness of the public already for at least twenty years now. Many researchers and clinicians claim that the mercury in combination with other heavy metals emitted by the amalgam fillings (both as a vapour and in microscopic particles) is transported in every part of the body causing a number of dysfunctions and illnesses. This idea is supported by many publications and studies performed worldwide. Evidence has been found that mercury levels in the blood stream are affected even from simple activitites such as chewing a gum. The amount of mercury present in the body can be detected through blood analysis and other tests. Extensive information is to be found on the web site of the SAN (Stichting Amalgaamvrij Nederland) , the most comprehensive site we know on this subject in the dutch language. Much theory comes down to few clinical conditions which show just another face of pollution nowadays.

The removal of the amalgam fillings normally follows a safe procedure in order to minimize any additional exposure of the patient to mercury. The use of a coffer dam or "Clean Up" greatly helps to this goal and is routine also in our practice.

The proper removal of amalgam fillings can produce eventual health improvement although in many cases it takes 6 to 12 months after mercury amalgam removal for the symptoms to disappear. The healing process is further helped by the use of vitamins, chelating agents and dietary programs which will facilitate detoxification. The best possible oral hygiene must always accompany the treatment through all the steps and the use of proper Dental Floss, Dental Brush and Tongue Cleaner are at all times recommended to reduce the amount of bacteria present in the mouth.
